About Gothic Modern:
From September 19, 2025 to January 11, 2026, the Albertina Museum in Vienna presents Gothic Modern, an ambitious exhibition tracing how artists such as Munch, Beckmann, Kollwitz, and others found radical inspiration in the expressive art of the late Middle Ages. By placing masterworks of Modernism in dialogue with Gothic paintings, woodcuts, and religious iconography, the show challenges the notion of modern art as a break from tradition. Instead, it highlights how deeply emotional and spiritual dimensions of medieval art informed the 20th-century quest to depict life, death, suffering, and inner turmoil in new visual languages.
