Džemma, on view from 23 August 2025 to 25 January 2026 at the Latvian National Museum of Art, celebrates the life and work of Džemma Skulme (1925–2019)—a towering figure in Latvian modern art. Through bold color, expressive brushwork, and deep-rooted national symbolism, Skulme’s paintings reflect her resistance to ideological constraints and her unwavering dedication to Latvian cultural heritage. This centenary exhibition explores her evolution from state-imposed realism to modernist abstraction, her feminist undertones, and her pivotal role in Latvia’s fight for independence.
