Biography

Abraham Mendel was a highly esteemed and influential Israeli artist (1930-2002).

Mendel was born in Hungary and immigrated to Israel in 1941 as part of the Youth Aliyah. After graduating from high school, he studied painting at the "Painting and Sculpture Studio" in Haifa, under the guidance of painters Abraham Yashkil, Zvi Meirovich and Menachem Shemi. Immediately after graduating, he exhibited his first exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum.

In 1956, Mendel moved to Jerusalem and began working in the State Revenue Department. During these years, he established the Tax Museum and managed it for many years.

Mendel also used to paint in large formats of oil paintings, as well as watercolor paintings, grid prints, and pencil drawings. The subject of his works ranges from landscapes to Israel, with an emphasis on the city of Jerusalem, urban landscapes and portraits.

Abraham Mendel's works have been exhibited in many exhibitions in Israel and around the world, including in prestigious galleries in New York, Britain, Ecuador and more.
