About Music & Art: The Symbolism of Music in Dutch Genre Painting:
On January 16, 2026, the Foundling Museum in London hosts Music & Art: The Symbolism of Music in Dutch Genre Painting, a one-hour lecture with Dutch art historian Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff. This engaging talk reveals the hidden meanings behind musical instruments and performances depicted in 17th-century Dutch genre paintings. Using examples from masters of the Golden Age, Mariska explores how artists used visual symbols to tell complex stories that transcended language and literacy. Part of the museum’s A Grand Chorus: The Power of Music exhibition programme, the lecture requires no prior knowledge and is available both in-person (includes museum entry) and online, with recordings available for one month.
