Fair Concept: A New Format for the RegionThemed “Becoming”, the first edition reflects on humanity’s ongoing transformation and the systems shaping how we live, believe, and create meaning. Within the Gulf’s layered cultural landscape—where oral traditions meet digital networks and historic trade routes are reimagined as cultural flows—art emerges as both witness and force of change.
Instead of traditional booths, participating galleries will present solo projects aligned with the fair’s thematic framework, designed to foster dialogue and critical reflection. This innovative format underscores Art Basel’s goal of bridging regional creativity with international perspectives, while ensuring strong market relevance.
Artistic LeadershipThe Artistic Director of Art Basel Qatar 2026 is Wael Shawky, the internationally acclaimed Egyptian-born artist celebrated for his multidisciplinary practice spanning film, performance, and storytelling.
Shawky, whose recent accolades include representing Egypt at the 60th Venice Biennale (2024) with his video work Drama 1882, brings both deep regional insight and global recognition. Together with Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s Chief Artistic Officer and Global Director of Fairs, Shawky will lead the curatorial vision and gallery selection process.
In parallel, Shawky also serves as Artistic Director of Doha’s Fire Station, where he has launched the Arts Intensive Study Program (AISP) to support emerging international and Qatari artists.
