About Extended Play: A-Side:
On view from June 4 through September 27, 2026, at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), Extended Play: A-Side examines the evolution of postwar American abstraction through artists associated with the Washington Color School and the groundbreaking practice of Sam Gilliam. Inspired by the structure and improvisation of jazz music, the exhibition features works by Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Alma Thomas, and Gilliam, tracing the movement from Color Field painting toward dynamic sculptural abstraction. Through bold compositions, draped canvases, and vibrant color relationships, the exhibition highlights new approaches to rhythm, movement, and form in contemporary art history.
