Ushpizin, 2024 A Semi-Abstract, Mixed Technique, Painting
A charged semi-abstract figure emerges with warmth, force, and a striking sense of self-possession.
Built around the nude body but loosened by splintered line, splatter, and scraped texture, this original artwork balances vulnerability with command. Ochre, umber, burgundy, and black gather against a pale ground, giving the figure both heat and gravity. The result is a mixed technique painting that feels immediate, physical, and intensely seen. The composition holds the figure in a state between recognition and dissolution. Contour lines assert the back, hips, and torso, while broken passages of paint interrupt any fully stable reading of the body. This push between legibility and fracture gives the image its sustained interest: the eye moves from dark linear accents to warmer blocks of color, then back into the exposed ground. Splashes and roughened surfaces keep the painting active, so the figure reads less as a fixed depiction than as an event unfolding through gesture.
Artistic Perspective
This work carries the kind of authored confidence that rewards a collector looking for more than a straightforward figurative image. Gordon uses distortion not to obscure the subject, but to intensify it, allowing the body to function as both presence and structure. The mixed-media handling, expressive restraint, and refusal of polish place the painting in a distinctly contemporary, gallery-aware language while keeping the human subject central.
Color and Presence
Its palette gives the work much of its emotional weight. Earthy golds, browns, and deep wine-reds create warmth, but the effect is not soft; black marks and the cool grey ground sharpen the whole surface and keep it dramatic. Because the color is layered rather than bright, the painting has presence without glare. It suits spaces that can hold a work with visual heat, contrast, and a more introspective kind of intensity.
