Space, 2022 A Figurative, Acrylic on Canvas, Painting
A dreamlike figurative painting that turns intimacy and mystery into a vivid, cosmic encounter.
Two seated figures hold the center of a dark, star-like world where fish, planets, flowers, and mirrored forms drift through a suspended visual logic. Richard Heley uses saturated blues, purples, and warm accents to create an original acrylic painting that feels both tender and enigmatic, inviting slow looking rather than quick explanation. The composition is built around a paired human presence, but its real force comes from the way Heley destabilizes ordinary space. Reflection, inversion, and floating symbolic elements create a layered image that reads almost like a dream remembered in fragments. The square format gives the scene a contained, icon-like balance, while the dark ground intensifies the bright clothing, celestial forms, and small bursts of color. The result is a figurative artwork with strong surreal structure: legible enough to enter, strange enough to keep unfolding.
Where It Fits
At 108 x 108 cm, this painting has the scale and graphic clarity to hold a larger wall without losing its more intimate emotional register. It suits spaces that benefit from imaginative energy rather than visual neutrality—especially a gallery-style setting, creative workspace, or art studio where viewers can spend time with its symbolism. Its presence is strongest where the room allows a little distance, letting the dark field, mirrored lower half, and vivid figures fully register.
Artistic Perspective
This work stands out through authored composition rather than pure atmosphere alone. Heley brings together figurative clarity, symbolic staging, and anti-natural color in a way that feels personal and deliberate, not merely decorative. The painting rewards collectors drawn to contemporary surrealism with a poetic edge: it offers recognizable human connection, yet resists fixed narrative, leaving space for interpretation. That openness, combined with its confident formal balance, gives the piece lasting viewing depth.
