Pop Art
Using a pseudo my work deals with the subject of waste and the impact on our environment, featuring photographed waste products that are made into collages of consumer items and brand names such as Coka Cola and Pepsi, iconic consumer products that have traditionally been celebrated in pop art and placed on a pedestal. Spacejunk57 takes these same iconic products and shows them in a different light, less pop art, more dirty pop.
In doing so tradition and the value system of pop art is being challenged. Instead of placing these consumer brands on a pedestal they are better placed, slumped at the base, in keeping with where these items are found, littering the streets. This approach proposes a departure from the slick sheen, glamour and beauty of pop art, pop obsession has been replaced with a jumbled mixture of things, delivering a nihilistic punk ethos, depicting a dystopian vision, merged with a witty, colourful riot of rubbish, swirling and dancing like urban confetti off into infinity. What transpires is a form of social commentary, like holding up a mirror to society reflecting our throw away culture
