Realism | Surrealism
The idea of selling my paintings, becoming a “professional” painter, or aspiring to the “status of an artist” had never really crossed my mind. Becoming a good painter, however, was something I had thought about. I have been painting for many years, and I feel the time has come to put my work to the test.
I never attended art school, apart from a few drawing courses. My education was based on technical drawing, so I taught myself by studying and copying the techniques of Old Masters. An art dealer eventually commissioned me to reproduce works by Neoclassical artists such as Appiani, Hayez, David, and Ingres, which helped me develop my technical skills.
For many years, I worked as a technical draughtsman, first at the drawing board and later on a computer. After retirement, painting became a much bigger part of my life.
I developed my style by studying artists and movements that interested me: Courbet’s Realism, Hayez’s Romanticism, Dalí’s Surrealism, and De Chirico’s Metaphysical Art, while also following modern and contemporary art.
One of my current projects explores the relationship between people and their environment. The human figure is represented by female bathers, while Sardinia, where I live, provides the landscape. Living close to the sea and the beautiful beaches of Anglona naturally influenced this work.
I am not a landscape painter, although there is no shortage of beautiful scenery around me. Instead, I found myself drawn to bathers and their colorful beach umbrellas. They became part of small, surreal worlds built around balanced geometric compositions. In the background, skies, seas, and beaches appear as horizontal fields of bright color, giving the paintings a metaphysical atmosphere
